Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon Temple) Tokyo

Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon Temple), Tokyo, contemporary painting by Peter Kettle depicting the historic temple and pagoda architecture of Sensō-ji in Japan.

60 x 80 cm

oil on canvas

Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon Temple), Tokyo focuses on the rising architecture of one of Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temples. The pagoda and sweeping temple roofs emerge through layered passages of red, ochre and deep charcoal, punctuated by fragments of turquoise and green. The painting draws together the monumentality of the historic structure with the colour, movement and energy of contemporary Asakusa.
