Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto

Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto, contemporary painting by Peter Kettle inspired by the rooflines, gardens and historic Zen architecture of Kennin-ji in Kyoto, Japan.

60 x 60 cm

oil on canvas

Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto reduces the historic temple to intersecting planes of roof, wall and garden. Deep violet and earthen architectural forms cut across passages of vivid green, turquoise and scattered colour, allowing the familiar structure to move towards abstraction. Layered oil and mixed-media marks explore the relationship between the ordered architecture of the temple and the shifting life of the gardens surrounding it.
