Japan Alps, Kamikochi Valley, Evening draws on the changing light and colour of the mountains as daylight begins to fade. Broad passages of mineral white, rust, ochre and deep blue fracture the landscape into overlapping forms, suggesting mountain slopes, river and exposed rock. The painting moves away from a literal view of Kamikochi, instead recalling the weight, texture and atmosphere of the Japanese Alps at the end of the day.
