Azusa River, Kamikochi Valley – Japan Alps reduces the landscape to fragments of mountain, water and shifting colour. Pale mineral tones and broken whites move against turquoise, ochre and deep earthy passages, suggesting the clear waters of the Azusa River cutting through the mountainous Kamikochi Valley. The painting moves between observation and abstraction, capturing something of the geology, movement and atmosphere of the Japanese Alps.
