Kilimanjaro rises beyond the plains of Amboseli, its immense form appearing almost detached from the landscape below.
The painting draws on the contrast I found so striking here: the cool, distant mass of the mountain against the heat, colour and activity of the savannah. Layers of broken marks and vegetation move across the foreground, while Kilimanjaro sits quietly above it all.
