Where the Valley Opens captures the moment the wooded landscape of Kamikochi begins to give way to the mountains beyond. A pale track moves through the composition between dark forest, turquoise water and rising slopes, drawing the eye towards the light of the open valley. Layered oil and mixed-media marks shift between observation and abstraction, reflecting the experience of moving through the Japanese Alps as the landscape gradually reveals itself.
