Nakasendo Samurai Trail - Japanese Red Cedar

Nakasendo Samurai Trail, contemporary landscape painting by Peter Kettle inspired by Japanese red cedar forest along the historic Nakasendo Trail in Japan.

120 x 80 cm

oil on canvas

Nakasendo Samurai Trail – Japanese Red Cedar draws on the ancient route through Japan’s forested mountains, once travelled by samurai, merchants and pilgrims between Kyoto and Edo. Tall cedar trunks form a rhythmic structure through the painting, broken by layered fragments of turquoise, earth, moss and rust. The work reflects both the physical landscape and the traces of countless journeys embedded within the historic trail.
