A Soft, Silent Snowfall draws on the snow-covered forests of Hokkaido in northern Japan. Slender trunks emerge through layered passages of white, turquoise and deep blue, while broken marks and glimpses of colour suggest snow, water and forest floor. Rather than depicting a particular view, the painting recalls the quiet, immersive atmosphere of moving through the Hokkaido landscape in winter.
